Welcome to the world of fairy-tales by the Brothers Grimm

The concept of the German Fairy-tale Route was founded in 1975 in the historic townhall of Steinau an der Strasse, home of the Brothers Grimm. The German Fairy-tale Route organisation comprises a team of 60 towns, communities and districts and, since its inception, is one of the oldest and favourite holiday routes in Germany.

A route of more than 600km, stretching from Hanau in the south to Bremen in the north, meanders past places where the Brothers Grimm have lived and worked, as well as places and landscapes in which their fairy-tales were set.

The Fairy-tale Route offers art and history, it leads to delightful towns of half-timbered houses, castles and palaces. It includes museums and galleries, invites to visit concerts and theatres and links tradition, city atmosphere and local art.

The Fairy-tale Route with its many landscapes is varied, yet always delightful. Here are the German low-mountain regions with the valley of the River Kinzig between the Vogelsberg and Spessart, the gentle Schwalm, the densely forested Knüll, the hunchbacked Chattengau area south-west of Kassel, the idyllic Eichsfeld and the Weser mountain region with its charming river valley. There is the lowland plain in the north with its fertile marshes of the River Weser and its mouth close to the sea near Bremen. This fairy-tale paradise can also be discovered on foot – along numerous enchanting footpaths – or by bike. A myriad of regional and national cycle paths run through gentle valleys or hilly countryside.

The German Fairy-tale Route is worth a detour at any time. Strung along a route of 600km is one fair after another. Fairy-tales and legends are resurrected in many places: There are open-air theatres, puppet-show festivals, fairy-tale weeks and puppet theatre. At some places visitors are welcomed by genuine fairy-tale figures; others offer package deals to “experience fairy-tales” for the young and old. Fairy-tale menus, barn-fests and royal banquets and the ever favourite feasts ensure not only culinary delights but also a charmed atmosphere.

Everything is simply enchanting along the German Fair-tale Route.
