Devil’s Mill of Ilbeshausen and the Devil’s Stone
=================================================

The Legend of the Devil’s Mill of Ilbeshausen and the Devil’s Stone

The Legend of the Devil’s Mill of Ilbeshausen and the Devil’s Stone
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone hiking through the Vogelsberg region and passing through Ilbeshausen on the way to the Oberwald forest will notice a magnificent, elongated half-timbered house decorated with elaborate carvings and ornaments around its windows, doors, and wooden beams.

On the second floor, one of the wall panels displays a black-painted human face wearing a hat. According to local tradition, this figure is said to represent the **Devil**.

The legend tells of a man who spent seven years in the Oberwald forest cutting and preparing timber for the construction of his dream house. He carefully shaped every piece of wood according to his own design. But when the time came to build the house, pride overcame him. In his arrogance, he challenged the Devil to a contest, claiming that he could build just as quickly and beautifully as the Devil himself.

The two began their work. The Devil constructed the lower part of the gable, creating a masterpiece of craftsmanship that still amazes visitors today. The man built the upper section, but his work did not come close to matching the beauty and perfection of the Devil’s creation.

The Devil finished first. As a sign of mockery, he placed his hat on the highest point of the building facing toward the forest. Then he took the man to the fields near Crainfeld and tore him apart in the air.

Since that day, the magnificent half-timbered house has been known as the **Devil’s Mill** (*Teufelsmühle*). Inside the building is a wall panel that looks like a window from the outside. According to legend, this is the place through which the Devil still occasionally enters and leaves the house.

**The Legend of the Devil's Stone**

If you walk from Ilbeshausen to Breungeshain through the Oberwald forest, you will find a large stone not far from the path. This rock is known as the **Devil’s Stone** (*Teufelsstein*).

According to the legend, a group of wicked people once played cards with the Devil there throughout an entire night. Even today, visitors can see a hollow in the stone where the Devil is said to have placed his gambling coins.

The Devil’s Stone and the Devil’s Mill are reminders of a time when unusual landscapes, mysterious buildings, and natural formations were explained through stories of supernatural forces. These legends remain an important part of the folklore of the Vogelsberg region

----------------------------------------------------------

Located in the heart of the Vogelsberg, one of Germany’s oldest volcanic landscapes, **Grebenhain** is a place where nature, history, and folklore come together. The region’s forests, basalt formations, and traditional villages have inspired countless stories and legends for centuries.

The **Devil’s Mill of Ilbeshausen** is one of the most remarkable examples of historic half-timbered architecture in Hesse. Its unusual design and the legend surrounding its creation make it a fascinating destination for visitors interested in German folklore and hidden cultural treasures.

Nearby, the **Devil’s Stone** adds another mysterious chapter to the local legends. These sites show how people of earlier generations connected dramatic landscapes and extraordinary buildings with tales of the Devil and supernatural events.

Today, Grebenhain invites visitors to explore the legendary side of the Vogelsberg. Hiking trails lead through forests, volcanic landscapes, and charming villages where history and storytelling remain alive. As part of the cultural landscape connected to the **German Fairy Tale Route**, Grebenhain offers an authentic experience away from the well-known tourist paths—a place where nature, architecture, and German legends meet.
