The Bornschisser ("Spring Fouler")
==================================

The Legend of the Bornschisser ("Spring Fouler")

The Legend of the Bornschisser ("Spring Fouler")
------------------------------------------------

According to local legend, the people of Rotenburg an der Fulda suffered greatly during the Middle Ages from robbers, looters, and thieves who had taken refuge in the castle on the nearby Hausberg hill, today known as the ruins of Rodenberg Castle.

Determined to drive the intruders away, the honest townspeople came up with an unusual and rather unrefined strategy. They deliberately contaminated the castle's springs and wells, making the water supply unusable. Unable to remain without clean drinking water, the bandits were forced to abandon the fortress and leave the hill.

From that day on, the people of Rotenburg became known as the **Bornschisser**. The nickname, which literally refers to those who fouled the springs, has survived through the centuries and remains one of the town's best-known and most cherished local legends.

From Folk Legend to the Town

From Folk Legend to the Town
----------------------------

The Bornschisser is the best-known legendary figure of Rotenburg an der Fulda and has been an inseparable part of the town's history and identity for generations. Told with a touch of humor, the legend celebrates the ingenuity, wit, and resourcefulness of the townspeople and remains a beloved part of local tradition.

Visitors to Rotenburg an der Fulda encounter the Bornschisser throughout the town—from the bronze statue dedicated to the legendary figure to themed guided tours and stories shared by local residents.

Yet the picturesque half-timbered town offers much more than its famous legend. Historic streets, charming squares, the impressive Landgrave's Castle, and numerous fairy tale and folklore landmarks invite visitors to explore one of the highlights of Germany's Fairy Tale Route. Surrounded by beautiful timber-framed buildings, the River Fulda, and centuries-old traditions, Rotenburg brings history, folklore, and regional culture vividly to life.
