The world-renowned Sleeping Beauty castle Sababurg was founded in 1334 as "Zappenborgk" by the Archbishop of Mainz for the protection of pilgrims to the nearby pilgrimage town of Gottsbüren and from 1490 developed into a splendid hunting lodge by the Landgrave of Hessen. At the beginning of the 19th century, the beautiful castle was given up as a residency. The castle grounds rapidly decayed into that wild romantic condition which, after the appearance of the "Tales of Children and the Home" by the Brothers Grimm, soon was regarded as the location where the history of "Sleeping Beauty" must have taken place.
The impressive "sleeping" castle, entwined by ivy and hidden deep in the Reinhardswald, is surrounded by a large wall which once was supposed to have been a dense and impenetrable thorn hedge, was kissed awake for the visitor about 100 years after the "sleep of Sleeping Beauty ".... Today, a romantic castle hotel is located on the famous grounds, a café with its own confectionery and a restaurant with gourmet cuisine, a civil registry office, as well as the SabaBurgTheater.
