Alsfeld - Historic. Enchanting. Alive!

Make an excursion into the city of fairy tales and half-timbered buildings to the world-renowned City Hall. Preservation, maintenance, refurbishment: this is the motto of Alsfeld. More than 400 half-timbered houses from seven centuries that make the passage through the old town into a storybook tale and exciting adventure, annually drawing into its spell far more than 100,000 friends of fairy tales, as well as holiday tourists and day visitors.

Alsfeld for friends of fairy tales

In the world of fairy tales, Little Red Riding Hood plays a special role in Alsfeld. It is said that the Brothers Grimm were inspired by the traditional costume of Schwalm with its red cap. Enchanting experiences that one does not forget are, for example, the annual Herb and Fairy Tale Day in June as well as a visit to the Alsfeld Fairy Tale House. In this half-timbered house from the year 1628, the rooms are decorated with themes from different fairy tales. Here is also one of the most important doll-house collections in all of Germany, as well as the ‘witch's parlour’. During a city tour you will get to know the Brothers Grimm, who invite you to a fascinating journey into the past. Finally, the Alsfeld market group will take you back to a time of fairy tales that will make not only children's eyes shine.

Alsfeld for holiday tourists and day visitors

The most impressive visitor magnet that Alsfeld has to offer is the picturesque market square with the Alsfeld landmark – the world-famous half-timbered town hall. Alsfeld is also a popular destination for visitors due to its numerous traditional festivals and markets such as the Whitsun market, the Herb and Fairy Tale Day, or the Christmas market. Whether you travel alone, with your family, or as a group, everyone will get their money's worth. For a sporting balance, Alsfeld, on the upper reaches of the Schwalm, offers many exciting hiking and cycling trails in a magnificent low-mountain landscape. Whether on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, on a llama or donkey tour, by coach tour or round trip: Alsfeld and its environs offer many excursions for gathering idyllic and fairytale impressions. A mixture of medieval and modern times will make your holiday in the largest city of the Vogelsberg an unforgettable experience.

Alsfelder Historical Tidbits

To be placed up against the wall, to have your head in the noose: punishment for fraudulent traders in the Middle Ages - today one of the most photographed motifs on the market square: the iron pillory at the corner of the wine house built in 1538/39.
