County Kassel

The district of Kassel is located in the heart of Europe and is at the very northern tip of Hesse. On 1300 square kilometres between the rivers Diemel, Weser, Fulda and Eder, it combines legendary landscapes with 28 lovely towns and communities to form a unique natural and cultural landscape. The two nature parks Reinhardswald and Habichtswald are "green treasure chests" full of offers and opportunities for nature lovers, hikers, cyclists and those simply seeking  a place to relax. In many towns and communities, historically valuable buildings characterise the townscape. Museums and ecological paths preserve history and make the cultural heritage of an entire region tangible. Discover for yourself the variety of offers and leave everyday life behind you during a fairytale stay in the home of the Brothers Grimm.

County Kassel for friends of fairy tales

It is not without reason that the wild forests in the district of Kassel are often referred to as “fairytale forests”. In addition to the enchanting forest pictures, numerous fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm have their origins here – above all the probably most famous fairy tales of Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. But also Hans in Luck or the Goose Girl are at home in these woods. In the summer months, one can even experience Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and their prince as live actors. Endless avenues of oak trees, extensive beech forests, idyllic river valleys and natural brook landscapes and clearings as well as the Diemel valley with its biodiversity in limestone grasslands and juniper heath offer new inspirations again and again. Fairytale castles and palaces, such as the Sleeping Beauty Castle Sababurg, the landgrave's castle and park Wilhelmsthal, the moated castle Wülmersen, Trendelburg Castle, the Krukenburg ruins as well as the castle ruins of Grebenstein and Weidelsburg just wait to be discovered.

District of Kassel for holiday tourists and day visitors.

For hikers, the district offers a wide range of activities: (almost) alpine mountain hiking, solitude in the forest, and the experience of an intact cultural landscape.

If, on the other hand, you are a passionate cyclist looking for a challenge, this low mountain region is also the right place for you. It offers everything a cyclist's heart desires, as numerous regional cycle paths in the district combine with the Hessian long-distance cycle routes to form a dense, varied network of paths.

The cycle paths along the Fulda, Weser and Diemel rivers are particularly recommended.

“Hesse's green northern tip" offers its guests not only "pure nature" but also a wealth of cultural events throughout the year. These range from concerts in castles, palaces and churches, from theatre performances and art exhibitions to the traditional folk festivals in our towns and communities – even if the Corona pandemic has led to severe restrictions here too.

Historical Tidbits

In addition to the charming natural landscapes, the district of Kassel is also rich in cultural history. Individual communities look back on more than 1000 years of history. Medieval half-timbered buildings, a newly-opened but historic inland harbour in the middle of a baroque planned city, a Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) that belongs to the national cultural heritage of Germany are only some of the many highlights. Remains of medieval fortifications, monasteries and pilgrimage churches, mighty castles and what is left of them are popular destinations for excursions. A large number of museums as well as city and village tours make the history of the district of Kassel and the people who shaped it come alive.
