Villages, Cities and Regions

Places and Regions

It’s a familiar image – yet few describe the German Fairy Tale Route better than a string of pearls. More than 60 towns and regions are linked together like colorful beads, all threaded along a single, magical route.

Each place has its own unique character, while together they create the rich diversity of this enchanting journey. Along the way, you’ll encounter key stages in the lives of the Brothers Grimm, as well as other notable figures such as Hans Staden. Towns like Baunatal and Schauenburg are closely tied to important contributors to the fairy tales themselves.

Some places are directly connected to well-known stories – Bodenwerder, for instance, is home to the legendary Baron Munchausen, while Ebergötzen brings Max and Moritz to life. In other regions, the bond to a particular tale is especially cherished, as in the “Frau Holle Land” or “Little Red Riding Hood Land.”

And then there are places where local legends and stories unfold in their own unique way – from Nienburg and Rehburg-Loccum in the Middle Weser region to Freiensteinau, Grebenhain, and Herbstein in the Vogelsberg, and many more waiting to be discovered.
