Bremen

Hometown of the Bremen Town Musicians and historical city

Bremen, the vibrant heart of northwest Germany and home to the world-famous Bremen Town Musicians, is a city of many faces. Here, history and tradition blend seamlessly with cutting-edge technology, science and space exploration to create a truly remarkable destination.

Bremen for Fairy-Tale Enthusiasts

Who does not know the world-famous Bremen Town Musicians from the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm? The best-known monument to the beloved quartet is the bronze sculpture created by Gerhard Marcks in 1953, located on the western side of Bremen’s Town Hall.

But this is not the only place where visitors can encounter the four animals who set out to seek their fortune in the Hanseatic city. The Bremen Town Musicians can be found throughout the city, including in the Craftsmen’s Courtyard of Böttcherstraße, where they adorn a fountain, and in the charming Schnoor Quarter, Bremen’s oldest district.

Those wishing to meet the famous musicians in person are in the right place. From May to September, the Bremen Town Musicians bring their story to life in a free open-air performance every Sunday at noon on Domshof Square in the city centre. Presented by life-sized actors, this entertaining show delights visitors of all ages.

Bremen for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors

More than 1,200 years of tradition and openness to the world have shaped Bremen, the Hanseatic city on the River Weser. Its most iconic landmarks are the magnificent Town Hall, built in the distinctive Weser Renaissance style, and the impressive Roland Statue. Both have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004.

Yet Bremen has much more to offer. The attractive Schlachte Riverside Promenade and the Maritime Mile in Vegesack invite visitors to stroll along the banks of the Weser and enjoy the city's maritime atmosphere.

Bremen’s museums provide a wealth of cultural and educational experiences. Fascinating exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Übersee-Museum, together with interactive attractions such as Universum Bremen and botanika, make the city an exciting destination for curious minds of all ages.

A lively calendar of events adds to Bremen’s appeal. Popular festivals such as Breminale, La Strada and the Freimarkt offer unforgettable experiences throughout the year and make any visit even more enjoyable.

Whether historic, surprising, green or vibrant, Bremen offers something special for every visitor.

Historical Tidbit

For a long time, the Böttcherstraße alley has been the connection between the market place and the Weser River. Between 1922 and 1931, Ludwig Roselius and the architect Bernhard Hoetger restored the entire alley and created the total Böttcherstraße work of art. There is an information sign about it at the Paula Becker-Modersohn House reminding us that a donkey bone was found in the working excavation. This should incontestably demonstrate that donkey, dog, cat and rooster ultimately did make it to Bremen.
