Bad Wildungen

Visiting Snow White and the seven Dwarfs

The renowned spa town of Bad Wildungen is situated in the lush green north of Hesse, in the heart of the Waldecker Land region along Germany’s Fairy Tale Route. Combining more than 600 years of spa tradition with a vibrant modern atmosphere, Bad Wildungen is a haven of relaxation offering a wide range of cultural, leisure and wellness experiences for fairy-tale enthusiasts, day-trippers and holidaymakers alike.

Bad Wildungen for Fairy-Tale Enthusiasts

Perched on a hill overlooking Bad Wildungen’s charming half-timbered old town stands the Baroque Friedrichstein Castle. It was the home of Countess Margaretha von Waldeck, who lived in the 16th century. The young noblewoman, renowned for her beauty, is said to have been poisoned at an early age. Her brother founded the nearby mining village of Bergfreiheit, nestled in the Kellerwald forest.

According to local tradition, Margaretha’s tragic fate inspired the Brothers Grimm’s famous fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a story beloved by families and children around the world. Visitors can still follow the footsteps of the princess and her dwarfs in Bergfreiheit, known today as the “Snow White Village”.

The fascinating Bertsch Visitor Mine, a former copper mine, the small Mining Museum, and the cosy Snow White House in the centre of the village, open throughout the year, offer insights into late medieval mining life and the possible origins of the Snow White legend.

Several times a year, lovingly staged fairy-tale performances for families and children are held on the idyllic open-air stage above the village. Traditional events such as the Easter bonfire, the Easter egg race and the Apple Press Festival provide opportunities to meet Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in person.

Bad Wildungen for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors

Bad Wildungen has much more to offer than fairy tales. It is equally attractive for health-conscious spa guests, sports enthusiasts, families and holidaymakers.

Bordering the pristine Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, the town is an ideal starting point for extensive hiking trails as well as scenic walking and cycling tours leading to the 27-kilometre-long Lake Edersee. After an active day in unspoilt nature, visitors can unwind in the QuellenTherme spa and wellness centre.

The spa and wellness town of Bad Wildungen, with its picturesque half-timbered old town and elegant spa quarter, can be explored on a variety of themed guided tours, including popular tours led by the town’s traditional night watchman.

Fifteen healing springs, two historic pump rooms and Europe’s largest spa park are worth visiting at any time of year. A lively programme of festivals, cultural events and seasonal celebrations further enhances the appeal of a visit or holiday in Bad Wildungen.
