Fürstenberg (Weser)

Panoramic views over the Weser Valley and one of Europe’s oldest porcelain manufactories.

Fürstenberg is a municipality in the Holzminden district and a state-recognized excursion destination. Located about 80 meters above the River Weser, Fürstenberg enjoys a uniquely beautiful setting. From no other place along the Upper Weser is there such a breathtaking panoramic view over the Weser valley, stretching into the neighboring federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.

Fürstenberg has been home, since 1747, to one of the oldest porcelain manufacturers in Europe, situated high above the Weser. The castle ensemble of the porcelain manufactory Porzellanmanufaktur FÜRSTENBERG—consisting of the castle with its modern museum and visitor workshop, the manufactory outlet, and the newly designed Bistro Carl—is a magnificent monument of Weser Renaissance architecture.

Fürstenberg for lovers of fairy tales

“Once upon a time…”—that is how all fairy tales begin, transporting listeners to distant times and places. It is much the same in Fürstenberg: the knight’s castle, the ducal hunting lodge, and the almost legendary founding of the porcelain manufactory. But while other fairy tales end with a princess riding off with her prince to live “happily ever after,” in Fürstenberg the story continues.

The porcelain manufactory and castle ensemble are a place of modern-day fairy tales, where one can dream among the “white gold” of banquet tables from past eras and be enchanted by living craftsmanship.

The modern museum presents a fascinating Porzellanmanufaktur FÜRSTENBERG exhibition across eight themed rooms covering the history of the manufactory, decorative art, design, and production techniques. Contemporary presentation methods, with engaging hands-on stations, allow visitors to experience the fascination of porcelain.

All questions about FÜRSTENBERG porcelain are answered in the visitor workshop in the castle. Craftsmen demonstrate how FÜRSTENBERG porcelain is made and decorated. Visitors can also create a personalized souvenir by painting their own piece of porcelain.

Precious porcelain, exclusive table linens, and accessories—discover refined table culture and find inspiration. In the manufactory outlet, you will find the complete FÜRSTENBERG collection, complemented by extravagant designer pieces.

Fürstenberg for vacationers and day-trippers

Located in the heart of the Weser Uplands, along the German Fairy Tale Route and near the half-timbered towns of Holzminden and Höxter, Fürstenberg sits above the Weser together with the Porcelain Manufactory FÜRSTENBERG.

A visit to the Museum at Schloss Fürstenberg is one of the most beautiful experiences in the Weser Uplands. The castle ensemble—an outstanding monument of Weser Renaissance—includes the porcelain museum with visitor workshop, the manufactory outlet, and Bistro Carl.

The view from the terrace in the castle courtyard over the Weser valley is breathtaking.

You can combine a visit to Fürstenberg with a Weser river steamboat trip. There is a landing stage directly below the castle. Discovering the beautiful landscape from the water is always a relaxing and memorable experience in the Weser Uplands.

Historical Tidbit

Fürstenberg's location in the middle of the Weser mountain region, on the border to North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, predestined the castle to be a border post at first. Later it was used as a hunting lodge by the dukes of Brunswick. Since 1747, the castle has been home to the FÜRSTENBERG porcelain works. In the castle courtyard, visitors can obtain interesting information on the history of the castle and the factory through "historical windows”.
