400 years of Blutpfingsten - commemoration instead of celebrationMay 18-25, 2026 | Hann. Münden
At Pentecost 1626, the town of Hann. Münden experienced one of the darkest chapters in its history: Count Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly besieged the town with eight regiments, bombarded it for days and had his soldiers invade via Mühlenstraße. The explosion of the powder tower and the ensuing massacre cost the lives of over 2,000 civilians - an event that has since gone down in history as "Blood Pentecost".
400 years later, we are commemorating this tragedy with a varied series of events. Costume tours, historical tours, scenic readings and an evening lecture invite you to relive the events of 1626 and put them into historical perspective. Church events will accompany the week with an ecumenical peace walk, devotions at the sites of the events and a concluding service on Whit Monday.
We are not celebrating - we are commemorating. Because these cruel events must not be forgotten.
