Hamelin

the Pied Piper Town

Between gentle hills and the River Weser lies Hamelin – right in the heart of the Weser Uplands and directly on the Deutsche Märchenstraße. This is the home of perhaps the most mysterious character in German folklore – the Pied Piper. His legend made Hamelin famous around the world, but today the town captivates visitors with much more: a vibrant blend of history, culture, and modern urban life.

Hameln for friends of fairytales

According to legend, a mysterious piper freed the town from a plague of rats in 1284. When the promised reward was denied to him, he led 130 children away with the sound of his flute. This world-famous story of the Pied Piper continues to live on in Hamelin to this day.

Here, the tale is not merely told – during the summer months it becomes an artistic experience in Hamelin’s historic old town.

From mid-May to mid-September, the open-air Pied Piper play takes place every Sunday at 12 noon. Around 70 actors perform the dramatic story of how the children disappeared from the town in 1284, based on the version recorded by the Brothers Grimm in their German Legends. The play about promises and betrayal lasts around thirty minutes and can be enjoyed free of charge.

Every Wednesday during the summer, visitors can also experience the humorous Pied Piper musical “RATS” at 4:30 pm free of charge. This 45-minute production delights audiences with its variety of musical styles — from waltz and marches to ballads and rap.

Those who do not wish to wait for the major performances can meet the Pied Piper daily at 1:05 pm, 3:35 pm, and 5:35 pm during the mechanical figure performance at the historic Wedding House.

The legend can be explored even more deeply at the Hamelin Museum. Housed in magnificent Renaissance buildings, it features a dedicated exhibition area centered around the story, including the impressive Mechanical Pied Piper Theatre.

Visitors seeking a more immersive experience can also book guided adventure tours with the Pied Piper through the local tourist information office.

Hameln for tourists and day visitors

A walk through Hamelin’s historic old town leads visitors directly into one of the jewels of the Weser Renaissance. Magnificent sandstone and half-timbered façades, golden inscriptions, and lovingly restored alleyways give the town its unmistakable charm.

Between Bäckerstraße and Osterstraße, shops and cafés invite visitors to stroll and relax, while landmarks such as the Pied Piper House, the Leisthaus, and the medieval town towers tell stories spanning almost 800 years of urban history.

Just a few steps away, nature begins. Walking paths along the River Weser, cycling tours on the popular Weser Cycle Route, or hikes up the Klüt hill with panoramic views over Hamelin and the Weser Uplands make the town equally attractive for active travellers.

From April to October, the ships of “Flotte Weser” depart from the Weser promenade for sightseeing and scheduled cruises, combining urban charm and natural scenery in a special way.

Hamelin brings together history, architecture, and nature — a destination that invites visitors to discover, linger, and return again.
