Those who want to discover fairy tales should spend their holidays in the university town of Marburg or the surrounding Marburg region. Even the Brothers Grimm were captivated by Marburg’s medieval atmosphere, with its old half-timbered houses, narrow streets, steep stairways, romantic market square, and imposing Landgrave Castle.

During their years of study between 1802 and 1806, this fairytale-like setting inspired Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm while collecting ideas for their Children’s and Household Tales.

A unique attraction is Marburg’s “Grimm-Dich-Pfad” (Grimm Trail), where fairy tale figures appear high above the streets on houses, stairways, and walls — delighting not only families and children, but visitors of all ages.

Marburg for tourists and day visitors

One of the highlights worth visiting is Marburg’s Landgrave Castle. Together with St. Elisabeth’s Church, it is among the city’s most important historic landmarks.

Visitors travelling along the Deutsche Märchenstraße should also explore the Marburg region, whose enchanting atmosphere inspired the Marburg painter Otto Ubbelohde (1867–1922) to create his famous illustrations for Grimm’s fairy tales.

Certified hiking trails leading to the historic sites connected with his artworks bring the fairy tales vividly to life. A visit to the Otto Ubbelohde House in Lahntal-Goßfelden completes the Marburg fairy tale experience. The former home and studio of the artist is now a museum, presenting changing exhibitions of his works....with a fabulous setting
