Hessian Lignite Mining Museum

Short facts

  • Borken

In the open-air museum, bucket-wheel and bucket-chain excavators, turbines and power station boilers illustrate coal mining above ground and the process of generating electricity. A visitor train also runs through the theme park on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and there are play and experimental areas for children. The "Borkener See" nature conservation information center demonstrates how former open-cast mines are transformed into "second-hand landscapes".

Above ground, the Coal & Energy theme park explains the extraction of lignite in open-cast mines and the process of generating electricity from it. The 3.5-hectare open-air area includes large-scale mining equipment, including bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators, rotating drilling equipment and an ensemble of historic mining locomotives. Numerous pieces of equipment are presented in demonstration mode.

A visitor train runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. There are play and experimental areas for children. In the "Borkener See" nature conservation information center, you can find out how "second-hand landscapes" are created from former open-cast mines.

After your visit to the museum, you can fortify yourself in the museum café Kohldampf in the theme park.

You can also visit the visitor gallery of the Hessian Lignite Mining Museum.
