Waldgaststätte Tillyschanze

Short facts

  • Hann. Münden

The Tillyschanze with its 25 meter high observation tower is a popular destination.

It is located on the edge of the Reinhardswald and offers a wonderful view over Hann. Münden.

The observation tower was built between 1881 and 1885. The name goes back to the siege and storming of the city of Münden in the 30 Years War and refers to Johann T’Serclaes von Tilly. In the upper tower room there is a monumental plaster relief (2 x 2.75 m) on the wall. It depicts the heroic "defense of the city of Münden in the 30-year war against Tilly".

The sculptor, painter and poet Gustav Eberlein (1847-1926) designed this room. The entire work was transported from the Berlin studio to Münden in several individual parts, which weighed 19 hundredweight when wet and with packaging. The colored relief was presented to the public on the first day of Pentecost in 1888. Weddings can be held in the lower tower room today.

The tower can be climbed during the opening times of the adjacent forest restaurant. You can get tickets from the operators of the restaurant. Guided tours can be booked on request. The forest restaurant with forest garden then invites you to linger.
