Schlossruine Rauschenberg
The castle ruins were originally a medieval hilltop castle. Presumably built in the 11th/12th century on behalf of Fulda Abbey, it was first mentioned in 1219.
The Ziegenhain dynasty of counts managed the castle from then on. In 1450, after the death of the last count of Ziegenhain, the castle fell to the Landgrave of Hesse, who used it as a hunting lodge. 1594 to 1597, the castle was finally converted into a landgrave's castle.
The Swedes plunder the castle in 1639 during the Thirty Years' War. At the behest of a Hesse-Kassel colonel, the castle is blown up during the Hessian War of Succession in 1646.
In 1830, it is used as a quarry and partially demolished.
