The Werratal Cycle Route follows the Werra close to the river from its two sources near Siegmundsburg and Fehrenbach in Thuringia, then leads in northern Hesse primarily through the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park and ends at the confluence of the Werra with the Fulda to form the Weser in Hann. Münden (Lower Saxony).

The bike path follows the river from the world-famous Rennsteig, through the varied landscapes of the Thuringian Forest, Thuringian Rhön, Werrabergland, Hainich and Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land. Many attractive half-timbered towns and tranquil half-timbered villages line the way. Cultural highlights in Thuringia are Eisenach with the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wartburg Castle, Bach's and Luther's Houses, the theater city of Meiningen, Veßra Monastery with the Henneberg State Museum and Creuzburg with its castle complex and Liborius Chapel on the old Werra Bridge. Large salt deposits characterize the region - in addition to the spa towns of Bad Salzungen and Bad Sooden-Allendorf, it is the white mountains near Heringen and the Merkers adventure mine that bear witness to potash mining. Last but not least, the traces of the former inner-German border, which was often located in the middle of the river in the area of the Geo-Nature Park, make the tour an interesting destination.

In the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park, the well-signposted route leads through well-kept half-timbered villages
