Sachsenhain

Short facts

  • Verden (Aller)

The Sachsenhain is a tour, lined with 4,500 granite stones, which was built in 1935.

In 1934 the foundation stone for a "Sachsenhain" was laid in Dauelsen. The National Socialist Reich leadership wanted to build a national thing and memorial here. The historical background for this was the tradition that where the Aller flows into the Weser, 4,500 Saxons were killed by the Frankish king Karl (later Charlemagne). Since there are no detailed reports about this event, there are more myths, legends, fantasy novels and adventurous interpretations about the so-called "Verden Blood Court".

In fact, the Sachsenhain is not an early medieval cult or meeting place and has no other historical significance. It is a vivid example of the ever new interpretation of history and its tragedies. The building and the area were used for training courses for the SS and the Hitler Youth; later refugees were housed.

Since 1950 it has been used by the Protestant youth, who now ensure that a completely different spirit blows than the builder had thought.

There are information boards on the circular route across the 15 hectare property that provide detailed information about the past and present.

But it is not only worth looking out for information boards. Occasionally you can spot small doors in Sachsenhain, for example at the bottom of the tree trunks. Do fairies live there?

Tip: visit the stork care station
It can be found on the left-hand side via the path to Sachsenhain from Eisseler Straße.
