North of Verden (Aller), the Weser cycle path passes a stork station just before the mouth of the Aller. Sick or injured animals are cared for here. You can find out more about the work at this station in the adjoining visitor center.
Now you cycle parallel to the LangwedelerSchleusenkanal towards Achim. You can see Etelsen Castle in the distance. At the Uesen boat harbor, the cycle path changes to the other side of the river. In Thedinghausen, Erbhof Castle is well worth a visit, as the manor house is one of the outstanding examples of the Weser Renaissance. The tree park and the ensemble of historic buildings surrounding the town hall are also worth a visit.
After Thedinghausen, the route continues past the Wieltsee marina in Dreye and over the dyke crest to Bremen. The old Hanseatic city offers many interesting sights. First and foremost is Bremen Town Hall, which, together with the Roland statue in front of it, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Opposite the town hall is the Schütting, an impressive Renaissance building with a delicate façade, reminiscent of the imposing houses of the once rich trading cities of Flanders. Next to the town hall, somewhat in the background but just as prominent due to its towering portal, is St. Peter's Cathedral. On the other side of the market, a row of historic houses completes the picture. The only building that does not quite fit into the ensemble around the market is the Senate building of the Bremen Parliament. To the side of the town hall is the much-visited bronze statue of the Bremen Town Musicians. You can see from the donkey's bare front legs that many visitors follow the custom of touching them because it is said to bring good luck.
Bremen also has many interesting districts that are a must-see. Firstly, there is Böttcherstraße, which starts right next to the Schütting and is a listed building. Built between 1922 and 1933, the architecture is classified as Brick Expressionism. Not far from the market, in the direction of the Weser, is the quaint Schnoor quarter, once a run-down slum that was to be demolished but was preserved and renovated thanks to public protests.
Today, the winding alleyways are part of the most popular old town quarter with numerous restaurants and pubs and a number of quirky souvenir shops. As part of the Expo 2000 project "City on the River", the promenade "Schlachte" was created directly on the Weser, which is also popular with locals and tourists alike.
Of course, you can also visit renowned museums in Bremen. First and foremost, the Bremen Kunsthalle. But the Überseemuseum and the Weserburg are also well worth a visit. For fans of scientific discoveries, a visit to the Universum is a must.
