Munchausen's Grotto

Cave / Stalactite Cavern
Historical Sites
The Münchhausen Grotto was built by Baron von Münchhausen on Hopfenberg in 1763 after the Seven Years' War.
What is special about it is its rural simplicity, combined with sparse elements, such as the stone inscription plate with its decorations or the two figures that can be seen on the front entrance side. The figure on the left represents Hercules and the one on the right Venus.

It was here that Munchausen recounted his world-famous adventures to his hunting guests. The grotto was part of the Münchhausen estate with his birthplace, the distillery and the Schulenburg, which has been converted into the Münchhausen Museum.

The museum provides further information about the Münchhausen Grotto and the life of Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen. The Münchhausen Grotto is not accessible from the inside.
