Monastery Church St. Marien

Churches
Monasteries
Of the former Benedictine monastery, only the more than 1000-year-old monastery church St. Marien, which was consecrated in 1046 by the Bishop of Minden, still exists.
The three-aisled pillar basilica made of Weser red sandstone is a gem of Romanesque architecture. Embedded in an ensemble of old half-timbered houses and the remains of the village church of St. Dionysius, it is located in the middle of the Kemnade district.

The interior of the church houses valuable art treasures and grave slabs from different centuries. The grave of the famous son of the city of Bodenwerder, Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Freiherr von Münchhausen, is also located in the church. A simple stone slab in the floor of the crossing is reminiscent of the legendary "Baron of Lies" who was buried there in the family crypt in 1797. The tombs no longer exist today.
