Herbstein for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts
The 750-year-old town of Herbstein, perched high on an ancient volcanic cone above the valley, is often described as picturesque and fairy-tale-like. Yet its legendary character is perhaps best reflected in the town's unique carnival tradition, known locally as Foaselt.
Foaselt is one of the oldest and most distinctive carnival customs in the German-speaking world. Its highlights include the spectacular Springerzug procession featuring the Bajazz and his six dancing couples, together with traditional characters such as the Pea Straw Bear, the Sieve Horse, the Stork, and the Monkey. Every year on Rose Monday, these colourful figures parade through the streets, bringing history and folklore vividly to life in a celebration that is both entertaining and deeply rooted in local tradition.
The forests and picturesque half-timbered houses of the High Vogelsberg region create a truly fairy-tale atmosphere. Europe's largest and oldest extinct volcano has shaped this remarkable upland landscape—an ideal setting where you would hardly be surprised to encounter Little Red Riding Hood along the way.
Even Herbstein's spa tradition has its own fairy-tale story. In 1976, a test drilling had almost been abandoned after reaching a depth of exactly 1,000 metres. Thanks to determination and perseverance, the drilling continued just five centimetres deeper into the volcanic rock. Those final centimetres revealed a natural thermal spring producing healing mineral water at a pleasant 32.6°C (90.7°F), leading to the creation of today's VulkanTherme thermal spa.
Herbstein for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors
Herbstein's central location makes it an excellent base for hiking, cycling, inline skating, and horse riding throughout the Vogelsberg region.
The historic old town surrounds the late Gothic Parish Church of St James like a protective ring. The circular street layout reflects the town's medieval fortifications, which can still be explored today along the walkable town wall with its towers. Visitors can also discover the underground vaulted cellars—the last surviving remains of the former castle. Other highlights include the picturesque market square with its impressive half-timbered Town Hall, the Protestant church, and several fascinating museums.
The spacious spa park, home to the VulkanTherme, also features a giant slide, a miniature golf course, a Pit-Pat course (a combination of mini golf and billiards), and an inclusive fitness trail suitable for visitors of all abilities. Another popular family destination is the Adventure Bible Park at the Kolping Holiday Village, offering interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.
