Surprising, Vibrant, Diverse
The charming half-timbered town of Hofgeismar, also known as the Sleeping Beauty Town, lies in the heart of the Reinhardswald Nature Park, where the German states of Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Lower Saxony meet. Just 25 km (16 miles) away is the city of Kassel, home to the world-famous documenta art exhibition and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe.
Quiet medieval streets, beautifully preserved half-timbered buildings, a spacious pedestrian zone, and the stunning landscapes of the Reinhardswald Nature Park give Hofgeismar and its surrounding districts a unique charm. Countless opportunities for hiking, walking, and cycling make the town an ideal destination for nature lovers and active holidaymakers.
Hofgeismar for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts
The undisputed highlight is Sababurg Castle, better known as Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Immortalised through the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, this enchanting castle stands majestically within the Reinhardswald Forest in the Sababurg district of Hofgeismar.
Since 2018, the State of Hesse has been carefully restoring the castle. Extensive conservation work on the historic buildings and gardens is still underway before the entire complex can fully reopen. In cooperation with the State of Hesse, the Town of Hofgeismar is working to keep parts of the magical castle grounds—including the castle courtyard and sun terrace—accessible to visitors whenever possible during the restoration period.
A programme of fairy-tale events also brings the castle to life, with Sleeping Beauty and her Prince strolling through the castle grounds on selected dates.
Visitors are advised to check the latest information on opening times, events, and any restrictions due to restoration work before travelling.
Close to the castle is Sababurg Wildlife Park, home to the Reinhardswald Nature Park Information Centre. It is Germany's oldest wildlife park still preserved on its original site. Just a short walk away lies the Sababurg Primeval Forest, Hesse's oldest protected nature reserve, famous for its magnificent ancient grazing oaks.
The area also offers numerous guided nature walks, hiking tours, and town tours, making it easy to discover the rich natural and cultural heritage of the region.
Several restaurants and cafés are located near the entrance to the wildlife park, providing convenient places to relax and enjoy regional cuisine.
