Kassel District

At the Heart of Europe

The District of Kassel lies in the heart of Europe and forms the northernmost district of the German state of Hesse. Covering an area of 1,300 square kilometres between the Rivers Diemel, Weser, Fulda, and Eder, it combines legendary landscapes with 28 charming towns and municipalities to create a unique cultural and natural landscape.

The Reinhardswald and Habichtswald Nature Parks are true green treasures, offering countless opportunities for nature lovers, hikers, cyclists, and those seeking peace and relaxation. Historic buildings shape the character of many towns and villages, while museums and themed Eco Paths preserve the region's fascinating history and bring its rich cultural heritage vividly to life.

Discover the remarkable diversity of this unique region and leave everyday life behind as you enjoy a fairy-tale stay in the homeland of the Brothers Grimm.

The District of Kassel for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts

It is no coincidence that the ancient forests of the District of Kassel are often called the Fairy Tale Forest. Alongside their enchanting woodland scenery, they are closely associated with many of the Brothers Grimm's most famous fairy tales—most notably Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. Stories such as Hans in Luck and The Goose Girl also have strong connections with the region.

During the summer months, visitors can even meet Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and her Prince in person at selected events.

Endless avenues of ancient oak trees, extensive beech forests, idyllic river valleys, natural streams, woodland clearings, and the Diemel Valley—with its species-rich limestone grasslands and juniper heathlands—create ever-changing landscapes that seem to have stepped straight out of a fairy tale.

Magnificent castles and historic fortresses await discovery throughout the district, including Sababurg Castle (Sleeping Beauty's Castle), Wilhelmsthal Palace and Park, Wülmersen Moated Castle, Trendelburg Castle, the ruins of Krukenburg Castle, as well as the castles of Grebenstein and Weidelsburg.

The District of Kassel for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors

The District of Kassel offers an extraordinary variety of walking and hiking experiences—from almost alpine mountain trails and peaceful forest paths to routes through beautifully preserved cultural landscapes.

Cycling enthusiasts will also find ideal conditions in this low mountain region. A dense network of regional cycling routes connects seamlessly with Hesse's long-distance cycle paths, offering rides to suit every level of ability. Particularly recommended are the scenic routes following the Rivers Fulda, Weser, and Diemel.

Known as "Hesse's Green Northern Tip," the district offers much more than outstanding natural beauty. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy a rich cultural programme ranging from concerts in castles, palaces, and historic churches to theatre performances, art exhibitions, and traditional festivals celebrated in the region's towns and villages.

Whether you are looking for fairy tales, outdoor adventure, cultural heritage, or simply a place to relax, the District of Kassel warmly invites you to discover its many treasures.

Historical Tidbit

In addition to the charming natural landscapes, the district of Kassel is also rich in cultural history. Individual communities look back on more than 1000 years of history. Medieval half-timbered buildings, a newly-opened but historic inland harbour in the middle of a baroque planned city, a Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) that belongs to the national cultural heritage of Germany are only some of the many highlights. Remains of medieval fortifications, monasteries and pilgrimage churches, mighty castles and what is left of them are popular destinations for excursions. A large number of museums as well as city and village tours make the history of the district of Kassel and the people who shaped it come alive.
