Lahntal

Fairy-Tale Charm

Lahntal is a true fairy-tale destination. Mysterious places, enchanting gnome houses, ancient gnarled trees, legendary stories, and the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm all come together here. The region is especially connected with the renowned fairy-tale illustrator Otto Ubbelohde, whose artwork brought many of Grimm's stories to life. In the village of Goßfelden, visitors can explore his original home and studio, preserved much as he left it.

The municipality of Lahntal was established in 1974 through the merger of the formerly independent villages of Brungershausen, Kernbach, Caldern, Sterzhausen, Goßfelden, Sarnau, and Göttingen. Today it lies just ten minutes from the university city of Marburg.

Lahntal for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts

Plan a magical journey through the picturesque villages of Lahntal and discover a landscape filled with myths and legends.

Near Brungershausen lie the legendary Gnome Houses (Wichtelhäuser), a remarkable rock formation hidden in the forest. According to local legend, these rocks were once home to friendly gnomes who lived peacefully alongside the villagers. The gnomes mined gold and exchanged it with the people for the things they needed. But human greed eventually angered the little folk so deeply that they disappeared forever. Today, visitors can climb the rocks and enjoy magnificent views over the surrounding countryside.

In Goßfelden, the celebrated painter and graphic artist Otto Ubbelohde built his own house, which has been preserved in its original form. His studio displays numerous drawings and illustrations inspired by the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales, alongside changing exhibitions throughout the year. The charming garden surrounding the house provides a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the unique atmosphere.

Lahntal for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors

Lahntal's beautiful landscapes are characterised by the peaceful floodplains of the River Lahn and extensive forests, making the region ideal for walking and cycling.

Discover the municipality's oldest building, the Convent House, located in Paradise, the former monastery garden beside St Nicholas' Church. From there, hiking trails lead to the Rimberg, Lahntal's highest hill. Visitors who climb the observation tower are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views.

Below the Rimberg lies the idyllic village of Kernbach with its charming little church. Near the historic bridge over the River Lahn, pleasant picnic areas invite visitors to rest, while the old weir offers the chance to wade barefoot through the river—a delight for children and adults alike.

The gently rolling Wollenberg hills provide another excellent walking area, where the famous Gnome House Rocks await discovery. In Sterzhausen, the beautiful 12th-century church is well worth a visit, and visitors can even enjoy guided alpaca walks through the countryside.

Back in Goßfelden, the In the Footsteps of Otto Ubbelohde Trail features 16 information points, offering fascinating insights into the life and work of the famous artist. The neighbouring village of Sarnau boasts a lovely riverside rest area on the Lahn, while nearby Göttingen completes a journey through all the villages of the municipality.
