Wiedensahl for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts

Come and Discover Wilhelm Busch Country!

Nestled among rolling fields, peaceful forests, and horse pastures—where the countryside stretches to the horizon beneath wide-open skies—lies the village of Wiedensahl.

Wilhelm Busch was born here on 15 April 1832 as the eldest of seven children. From this village he set out into the world as a young man and later returned as an artist, poet, and philosopher. He spent more than forty years of his life in the tranquillity of his home village, which remained his most important refuge and source of inspiration.

Wiedensahl is the home of Max and Moritz, The Pious Helene, Fipps the Monkey, and many of Busch's other unforgettable characters. The journey into his world begins at his birthplace, while the charming Old Rectory, another of his former homes, offers fascinating insights into his life. Historic crafts and everyday village life are presented in an engaging and authentic way.

At the entrance to the Old Rectory, an impressive monument welcomes visitors, while the museum mile is lined with imaginative silhouette artworks that invite visitors to create stories of their own.

Further attractions include Widow Bolte's Chicken Meadow and the unique Folding Rule Museum.

Following the well-signposted village walking trail allows visitors to delve even deeper into Busch's remarkable work. Beyond the village, the scenic cycling and carriage route "In the Footsteps of Wilhelm Busch" winds through the surrounding countryside, illustrated with sketches and information panels. The route can be explored by bicycle or, by prior arrangement, by traditional horse-drawn wagon.

Afterwards, several welcoming cafés and restaurants provide the perfect place to relax and reflect on the day's discoveries.

"Almost all of my works were created in the peace and quiet of Wiedensahl."— Wilhelm Busch, in a letter to journalist Paul Block (1902)

Historical Tidbit

Wiedensahl arose as the only Hagenhufen village [an elongated settlement running parallel to a stream with usually only one side of the road having houses, with small fields on the other side] in the region with houses built on both sides of the road, and was mentioned in historical documents for the first time in 1253. The great draftsman, painter and poet was born here on April 15, 1832. He lived more than 40 years in his village, which forms the background for many of his humorous stories and artistic illustrations.
