Rotenburg an der Fulda

Enchanting, Fairy-Tale and Full of Half-Timbered Charm

Known as the Pearl of the Fulda, Rotenburg an der Fulda lies not only at the narrowest point of the Fulda Valley but also amid the enchanting forested hills of the homeland of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. The blue ribbon of the River Fulda winds its way through the medieval town, whose colourful half-timbered houses provide a magical backdrop for visitors of all ages.

A stroll through the town quickly reveals its many bronze sculptures. From the Frog King in the palace gardens to the Night Watchman and numerous other lovingly crafted figures, each tells part of the town's story.

Not far from the Frog King stands Rotenburg's most famous legendary figure: the Bornschisser. This unique local character appears throughout the town as a sculpture, in paintings, and in local legends. During one of the entertaining guided fairy-tale tours, visitors can discover the fascinating story behind the Bornschisser—just one of the many legends that make Rotenburg an unforgettable stop along the German Fairy Tale Route.

Rotenburg for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors

The colourful half-timbered houses of Rotenburg stand closely together along the historic streets, warmly welcoming visitors to this charming town in the heart of the Brothers Grimm region. With their crooked beams and centuries of history, they seem ready to tell countless stories and legends.

Join Walburga the Witch on a guided walk through the narrow lanes, past the Witches' Tower, which still seems to guard many dark secrets. Along the way, discover how the people of Rotenburg acquired their nickname and hear the stories behind the town's bronze sculptures. Numerous other themed guided tours also offer memorable insights into the town's rich heritage.

The surrounding forests are equally full of enchantment. Along the ARS NATURA Art Trail, visitors encounter contemporary works of art approximately every kilometre, creating a unique combination of nature and culture. Open-air concerts and theatre performances held among the trees transform the forest into a truly magical setting.

One of Germany's most beautiful riverside cycle routes, the Fulda Cycle Route, passes directly through Rotenburg and enters the town beside the former Landgraves' Palace. This magnificent setting regularly hosts concerts and a wide variety of open-air events.

Rotenburg's museums also invite exploration. The Doll and Toy Museum, the historic Mikveh (Jewish ritual bath), and the District Heritage Museum present lovingly curated exhibitions that delight visitors of all ages and are complemented by a varied programme of events throughout the year.

In the palace gardens, an 18-hole miniature golf course and an adjoining adventure playground provide fun for the whole family. Walking along the tree-lined avenue towards the palace, visitors may well feel as though they have stepped into a fairy tale.

At the Heienbach Recreation Area, relaxation and adventure go hand in hand. A barefoot trail, a beautifully maintained Kneipp water-treading facility, a multi-generational playground, and an extensive network of hiking trails—including a woodland adventure trail—offer memorable experiences for visitors young and old alike.
