Waldeck for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts
High above Lake Eder rises the ancient Waldeck Castle, once the residence of the Counts of Waldeck. Visible from miles around, it is the unmistakable landmark of both the town and the Waldeck region, dramatically overlooking the lake below.
The noble family of von Waldeck is known to have lived here as early as the 12th century, although the castle's earliest history remains uncertain.
According to local legend, a shepherd once directed a knight searching for the ideal location for a new fortress to this wooded corner—Wald-Eck—thus giving the castle its name.
An even older legend tells of a pact between the builder of Waldeck Castle and the dwarfs who lived deep within the Eder Mountains beneath the castle rock. The Count of Waldeck promised Eck, the mighty ruler of the Eder dwarfs, that the underground caverns beneath the castle would remain their safe and peaceful home forever. In return, the dwarf king pledged that his people would build foundations so solid that the castle would never collapse, while also vowing to uphold justice and punish wrongdoing throughout his hidden realm.
