Waldeck

Sunny Days, Unforgettable Holidays

Perched 420 metres above sea level, the historic town of Waldeck, which was granted town privileges in 1232, lies within the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park. The town and the surrounding region both take their name from the castle that has watched over them for centuries.

The surrounding countryside captivates visitors with its idyllic meadow valleys, crystal-clear streams, and diverse natural landscapes. Combined with the area's mild, health-promoting climate, this unspoilt environment provides ideal conditions for both relaxation and outdoor adventure.

Waldeck for Fairy Tale Enthusiasts

High above Lake Eder rises the ancient Waldeck Castle, once the residence of the Counts of Waldeck. Visible from miles around, it is the unmistakable landmark of both the town and the Waldeck region, dramatically overlooking the lake below.

The noble family of von Waldeck is known to have lived here as early as the 12th century, although the castle's earliest history remains uncertain.

According to local legend, a shepherd once directed a knight searching for the ideal location for a new fortress to this wooded corner—Wald-Eck—thus giving the castle its name.

An even older legend tells of a pact between the builder of Waldeck Castle and the dwarfs who lived deep within the Eder Mountains beneath the castle rock. The Count of Waldeck promised Eck, the mighty ruler of the Eder dwarfs, that the underground caverns beneath the castle would remain their safe and peaceful home forever. In return, the dwarf king pledged that his people would build foundations so solid that the castle would never collapse, while also vowing to uphold justice and punish wrongdoing throughout his hidden realm.

Waldeck for Holidaymakers and Day Visitors

A stroll through the historic hilltop town of Waldeck, with its charming half-timbered houses and magnificent castle, is an unforgettable experience.

Other architectural treasures include the Marienthal Church in Netze, the historic Watten Mill in Freienhagen, and the ruins of the monastery at Ober-Werbe, each adding its own character to the region.

Waldeck is a perfect destination for families, culture enthusiasts, hikers, cyclists, and especially water sports lovers. Throughout the year, anglers, sailors, windsurfers, and divers enjoy the recreational opportunities offered by Lake Eder.

Visitors wishing to cross the lake can choose between the ferry service and scenic excursion boats.

Hiking remains one of the region's greatest attractions. The Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park and the neighbouring Kellerwald-Edersee National Park offer an impressive combination of ancient forests, cultural landscapes, and spectacular scenery. Whether you are an ambitious long-distance hiker or simply enjoy leisurely walks, there are routes to suit every level.

As one of the region's most popular holiday destinations, Waldeck provides an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside.

After a day outdoors, visitors can relax in one of Waldeck's traditional inns, where warm local hospitality, hearty regional cuisine, and beautiful beer gardens provide the perfect ending to the day.

Discover Waldeck

Historical Tidbit

Waldeck beauties are incidentally not from yesterday, the following words were already written in 1789:
"One can view the castle Waldeck and the town lying by it from afar, due to the high position of both. The first sight grants particular pleasure to the eye of the beholder the view from above the castle. The air is pure, dry and healthy."
