Bremen Town Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bremen Town Hall is located in the heart of Bremen’s Old Town, on the northeast side of the Hanseatic city’s impressive market square. Built between 1405 and 1409, this building—which is definitely worth seeing—is the seat of the Senate and the incumbent mayor. However, the building is open to all interested visitors for exciting guided tours and a wide variety of events. It’s even possible to get married at Bremen City Hall.

From the outside, the building captivates with a beautiful and intricately detailed Renaissance façade that has graced the City Hall since 1608. Inside, numerous stately rooms await guests for a variety of occasions. The Upper Hall is arguably Bremen’s most beautiful banquet hall; as the site of many historical events and alliances, it not only exudes a special atmosphere but also fascinates with its spectacular furnishings. Particularly striking are four magnificent model warships hanging from the ceiling. In the ballroom, gleaming oak wood meets a light-colored coffered ceiling and striking lighting. With the Güldenkammer, Bremen City Hall houses one of only a few remaining rooms in pure Art Nouveau style, whose walls are adorned with gilded leather wallpaper. Every Tuesday, the mayor and first lady, the senators, and their state councilors gather around the large oval table in the Senate Hall. Magnificent chandeliers hang above them. In the Fireplace Hall, the French marble fireplace decorated with Delft tiles is particularly eye-catching, while the bright, welcoming Gobelin Room, with its elegant ambiance, provides just the right setting for the weddings held at City Hall.

The fascinating vaulted ceilings of this historic building are also known as the “delicious foundation” of City Hall: wine has been served in the Bremen Ratskeller since 1405. Today, a diverse selection of around 650 wines from Germany’s 13 wine-growing regions delights the palate. As a result, the Bremen Ratskeller boasts the world’s largest selection of exclusively German wines and is also home to the famous Rüdesheim wine from 1653, the country’s oldest cask wine.

Together with Bremen’s Roland statue, Bremen City Hall has been listed as a World Heritage Site since July 2004. In doing so, UNESCO recognizes the ensemble as a “unique testimony” to the development of civic autonomy and market rights as they took shape in Europe over the course of centuries.
