Stucco ceilings, magnificent wooden inlays and works of art by Hanau artists such as Anton Wilhelm Tischbein, Friedrich Bury and Moritz Daniel Oppenheim as well as sculptures by August Gaul - but also fairy-tale creatures, paper theaters and modern inventions: all of this can be found in the Hanau Historical Museum. The museum is located in Schloss Philippsruhe, the little Versailles on the Main, built from 1701. Ferdinand Meldahl, one of the most important Danish architects of the 19th century, modernized it from 1875 to 1880 for the House of Hesse-Kassel zu Rumpenheim. The palace has been a historical museum and registry office since 1964.
The world-famous brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and their painter brother Ludwig Emil are presented in the GrimmsMärchenReich family hands-on museum in the north wing. Another highlight is the only paper theater museum in Germany, which is now open again after a comprehensive redesign as a museum within a museum and has resumed regular performances.
The palace garden is not only an inviting place to relax in the greenery. There is also a sculpture park with works by internationally renowned sculptors (including Claus Bury, Franz Erhard Walther, James Reineking, Klaus Simon and Dorothee von Windheim).
The castle restaurant in the White Hall and vaulted cellar invites you to linger. At the end of the park is the well-known amphitheater - the venue for the renowned Brothers Grimm Festival and many musical events.
