Museum Großauheim

The Großauheim Museum has been housed in the former power plant and bathhouse, built in 1906, since 1983. Following a major renovation in 2010 and 2011, visitors to the Großauheim Museum can now explore steam-powered machines, admire works by the Großauheim-born artists August Gaul and August Peukert, and learn about industrial history. The entire ground floor, featuring the art and industrial history sections, is accessible to all visitors.
(Steam) machines were the “engines” of industrialization and increasingly replaced the muscle power of humans and animals. Among other exhibits, the Großauheim Museum features a steam-powered locomobile with a threshing machine, a steam tractor, and a small tractor with an internal combustion engine from the Josef Bautz company, which manufactured tractors in Großauheim in the 1950s. In the former machine hall, energy production is reenacted using historic steam engines and generators. Here, visitors can also learn about energy generation from fossil and renewable resources. The machines can also be experienced in a very special way through Erwin Stache’s sound installation: Using control knobs, the sounds of the machines can be mixed into unique compositions. The project is part of the “Sound Art Meets Industrial Culture” series organized by Kulturfods and KulturRegion FrankfurtRheinMain.
In Großauheim, the exhibition “Made in Hanau” also takes a look at the present. The exhibition was created in collaboration with leading Hanau-based companies and highlights Hanau as a center for research and development.
