Neustadt town hall

The swan, Hanau's heraldic animal, is enthroned on the spire, two female figures symbolize justice and peace on the front gable, and the city's patron saint Hanoviae looks out from the coat of arms on the balcony. The baroque Neustadt Town Hall is probably one of the most symbolic buildings in the city. It was built in 1725 under Johann Reinhard III von Hanau-Lichtenberg; the double coat of arms of the Count and his wife Friederike von Brandenburg-Ansbach still adorns the front gable of the town hall today. Towards the end of the Second World War, the town hall was destroyed down to the front during a bombing raid and was only rebuilt in the 1960s. After several years of renovation, it has once again been the seat of the city council since 2022. Art exhibitions are regularly held in the foyer.
A special feature in the run-up to Christmas: the town hall windows are transformed into Hesse's largest Advent calendar with fairytale motifs, which opens a "little door" every evening at 6 pm. Another highlight, again every day at 10 am, 12 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm: Melodies and songs from the bell tower - from "Die güldene Sonne" to "Guten Abend, gut' Nacht" and also music by Hanau-born musician Paul Hindemith.
