Old Town Hanau

The best place to start exploring Hanau's old town is the Altstädter Markt: here, at the highest point of an island in the River Kinzig, the city's history began with a moated castle, which was first mentioned in writing in 1143. The German Goldsmiths' House, once the town hall of the old town and still an important landmark today, is located directly on Altstädter Markt: The magnificent half-timbered building from 1538 bears witness to Hanau's rich past. And is a reminder of the high density of half-timbered houses that made up Hanau's old town - until it was largely bombed shortly before the end of the war on March 19, 1945. A model of the old town from 1905 - made by master glazier Günter Jacob - shows Hanau before the old town was destroyed. You can find it in the Alte Johanneskirche.
Other highlights are: the 14th century Marienkirche, which was rebuilt after the war; the preserved outbuildings of Hanau's city palace, which was destroyed in the war, the palace garden and the fairytale trail through the old and new town that starts here.
And of course the many stores, cafés and restaurants that give the old town its charm. For example, the "Deins" at Altstädter Markt 1, where you can end your tour and enjoy the flair of the origins of the old town once again with drinks and dishes with a Mediterranean touch.
