Old Town Steinheim

"When you stroll through the old town of Steinheim, you can see that every era has its own half-timbered style," explains Wolfgang Hasenpusch, one of Hanau's special half-timbered tour guides. In order to show the city's architectural heritage in the best possible way, he takes his groups to the other side of the Main, to the Hanau district: here he can show half-timbered gems such as Haus Volk in Harmoniestraße dating back to 1395, the house of the fishing guild from the 15th century and the impressive rectory at the Gedächtniskirche with its many St. Andrew's crosses and Wilder-Mann carpentry. Incidentally, many of the houses are not only pretty to look at, but also very nice places to stop for a bite to eat: Steinheim has made a name for itself with its cozy cider pubs.
Upscale regional cuisine is also available at another of the town's highlights, the 800-year-old Steinheim Castle. In addition to a museum where you can learn more about archaeological finds in the region and the history of Steinheim, the "Lug ins Land" restaurant serves Hessian classics such as Handkäs' with music, Frankfurter Grüne Soße or a Kochkäse schnitzel.
