The baroque palace on the banks of the Main is known as a "little Versailles". It prominently draws the attention of passing ship passengers to Hanau upstream and today houses its Historical Museum. Here you can see works by Hanau artists such as Anton Wilhelm Tischbein and Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, learn more about Hanau's emergence into the modern age and the founding of the new town - and of course about the palace itself. Count Philipp Reinhard von Hanau-Lichtenberg had it built from 1701; at the end of the 19th century, the interior in particular was modernized under the then owners of the palace: by the Dane Ferdinand Meldahl, one of the leading architects of his time.
Other highlights at Schloss Philippsruhe include Germany's only paper theater museum and the GrimmsMärchenReich hands-on museum, where children can dress up as one of Grimm's fairy tale characters, boulder on Rapunzel's tower and make up their very own fairy tale. And of course the castle park with sculptures of modern art and a unique view of the River Main.
