Stadthof Hanau
When Hanau’s large Kaufhof store on Marktplatz closed in early 2024, a chapter in the city’s history came to an end. The first Kaufhof predecessor had opened in Hanau in 1929, and the current building on Marktplatz opened in 1957. In 2009, to mark the company’s 130th anniversary, hundreds of Hanau residents sang a serenade in front of the store. But at the same time, a new chapter began: The city itself took over the now-vacant building. And in the spring of 2025, it opened the Stadthof, a “new home for innovative business ideas and retail concepts.”
Specifically, this means that in addition to fashion and jewelry boutiques, toy stores, dining options, and exhibitions, you’ll also find a stage at the Stadthof where discussions and performances are held regularly. And with the Freiraum, there’s a space where Hanau residents can showcase their clubs, businesses, or art, for example. It’s a clear signal: This isn’t just about consumption; the city wants to showcase its full diversity here and invite people to connect and get involved.
