Schloss Steinau castle, the former country residence of the Counts of Hanau, was built between 1525 and 1560. The palace building forms an irregular pentagon with four (originally five) wings, four upstream corner buildings ("pavilions") and two gatehouses in the north and south. The fifth wing in the southeast was destroyed when the Croats invaded in 1634 and was later completely removed, but the foundation walls and comb stones can still be seen today.
The Renaissance castle is surrounded by a 4-5 m deep and 18-25 m wide moat, the so-called "Hirschgraben". There is a children's playground in the Hirschgraben.
A Grimm exhibition is shown in the museum rooms. It is possible to climb the castle tower (41m) and enjoy a view of Steinau and the Kinzig valley.
